Santa Maria Public Library
Description
Public Library and Parking Structure: The City of Santa Maria is launching the first phase of a two-year construction project to build a $28.3 million, 60,000 S.F. Main Library, and a new two-level parking structure. The new two-story library will be built next to the existing Santa Maria Public Library in the Civic Center at East Cook Street and Broadway. It will be twice as large as the existing library and contain many more resources. Construction is scheduled to start in November 2005 with the Main Library's opening projected for May 2008.
New Main Library Plans: Expanded book collections and publications for all ages in both English and Spanish; 125 computers housed in a computer center; expanded children's and adult areas; new Young Adult-Teen Zone; children's theater for increased children's programming; a homework center for students in grades K-12, for more collaborative programs with local schools. A career center offering career and college information, test books and more; Study Rooms, community meeting room, expanded genealogy section, new literacy center; space for art exhibits. A new entry lobby area complete with a cafe and cafe seating as well "The Friendshop" a gift and used book shop operated by the Santa Maria Friends of the Library; and a private, outdoor patio area available to be booked for City or Community events and fundraisers.
