Bakersfield Californian Remodel
Description
Refinish/remodel of the existing main lobby for the Bakersfield Californian. This was sort of a design/build project. Project consisted of removal of floor materials, reception desk and limited ceiling renovation; supervision of removal of existing systems furniture by the Owner; painting; floor materials; partial height partitions, cabinetry, reception desk and custom work stations; reconfiguration of new work stations using refurbished systems furniture; electrical/technology, power, signal and data systems; window treatments; interior stair renovation, and the acquisition and installation of moveable furniture.
Much of the original beauty of the Bakersfield Californian Lobby has been hidden behind a maze of systems furniture and 75-years of patchwork remodel projects. The challenge to the design team was to blend modern day functional and technological needs into the restoration of a beautiful 1924 historical monument. The public lobby utilizes custom woodwork components that compliment the building's origins. Work station design focused on customer and service advisor comfort in the arts and crafts tradition while integrating current data needs and future flexibility.
One of the key design features includes the ceiling. After demolishing acoustical ceiling tiles, painters specializing in restoration were called upon to revitalize the painted details in the ceiling and light fixtures. A fabric wrapped panel system was installed between painted beams to reduce sound transmission while further enhancing the beauty of the crafted ceiling. Custom stair fabricators worked from design sketches and on-site meetings to attain a stair adapted to current code and consistent to the character of the building. A traditional black and white marble floor design was specified to coordinate with original marble base. A custom designed medallion was installed for both greeting customers and as a way to personalize the lobby.
The main paint color in the lobby was researched by the design team and is historically accurate for the arts and crafts period. Mecho-Shade window treatments were selected for light control, while showing the beautiful detailing of the original 7 foot windows.
